Tension in Delta state: Communal crisis, pregnant woman’s decomposing body found

– The decomposing body of a pregnant woman has been found by security operatives in Delta state

– A communal clash is said to be the reason the pregnant woman was killed

– Their are claims that the woman was killed while working on her farm

– Investigations are underway, no arrests has been made yet

The 38-year-old pregnant woman identified as Mrs Afor Sammy was allegedly killed in the inter-communal crisis between Igbide and Okpolo-Enwen communities, both in Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta state.

Sources reveal that the communities are at each-others’ necks over land ownership.

Sources said the decomposing body of the deceased, a mother of six, was recovered along the bush path behind Owodokpokpo-Igbide Grammar School by members of a local vigilante team.

A source, who sought anonymity, alleged that the deceased was attacked and killed in her farm, where she had gone to harvest groundnut, adding that “family of the pregnant woman had raised an alarm when they discovered that she did not return home from the farm.

“Consequently, the vigilante team organised a search party, who, after four days, recovered the decomposed body near a bush path behind Owodokpokpo-Igbide Community Grammar School.

“The community President was quickly informed and he, in turn, went to inform the police authorities at Oleh.”

Vanguard reports that police immediately sent two operatives to the spot and they were reported to have invited members of the deceased family that identified the corpse to be that of Mrs Afor Sammy.

The source added that a medical doctor from a hospital in Oleh was also brought in to conduct an autopsy, “and, thereafter, the corpse was released to the family for burial.”

Contacted on telephone, the divisional police officer in charge of the Oleh Division, declined comments on the incident, saying he had already sent signals to the state command headquarters in Asaba.

There have been several communal clashes in Delta state recently, leading to the loss of several lives.

The communal crisis between Aladja (Urhobos) and Ogbe-Ijoh (Ijaw) recently reached its peak with the invasion and sacking of a Divisional Police headquarters in Ogbe Ijoh, headquarters of Warri South West local government area.

Soldiers from 3rd Battalion had to be drafted into the crisis torn area before sanity could be returned to the war torn area.

It was learnt that the crisis which was brewing since came to the head over boundary dispute between the two communities leading to shootings and alleged burning down of houses.

Security sources disclosed that the police station located in Ogbe Ijoh was over ran and their armoury looted during the crisis.

Sources reveal that the clash was as a result of alleged attack on Aladja women who were returning from their farms by some Ogbe Ijaw youths.

But the Aladja youths on Thursday, March 24 blocked the only access road leading to Ogbe Ijaw community which allegedly provoked the clash between the two communities.

Meanwhile, Delta state governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa disclosed that the state government would set up a peace committee to resolve the lingering boundary dispute between Aladja community who are mainly Urhobo in Udu local government area and Ogbe-ijoh, who are Ijaw of Warri South West local government area of the state.

Speaking after a visit and a peace parley with both communities on Tuesday, April 26, Governor Okowa explained that the committee would see to the amicable resolution of the perennial communal clash so as to allow peace to reign in the area.
