“We created opportunities, but we just lost the ball, we couldn’t continue building phases and I think that’s the biggest reason for (the defeat) tonight.
“So I think if we can build a few phases there’s definitely space and there’s definitely opportunities. We’re going to work on that this week, for sure,” De Klerk said.
“Obviously we’re very disappointed as a side. We all know that we didn’t play the way we can play or to our potential. There’s always next week and we really want to make the nation proud, so we’re going to turn this around.”
And, in that respect, De Klerk feels the Boks could have an important factor on their side in the second Test - a passionate, hyped-up crowd at Ellis Park, the cathedral of South African rugby.
“There’s going to be great support for us at Ellis Park. The Boks also always play well at Ellis Park, so we will definitely want to make the step up. If we can pull it through next week it’ll be great, especially for the fans, it’ll be great.”
Replacement flyhalf Elton Jantjies paired up with De Klerk at halfback when No 10 Patrick Lambie was stretchered off the field in the 23rd minute after a nasty head knock. Ireland flanker CJ Stander contested for the ball in the air and connected with Lambie, leaving him unconscious with his arms sprayed out.
De Klerk also said that the Irish made ruck time an unpleasant experience for the Boks.
“Today was a bit slow, it felt a bit slow. I must say the Irish did well at the rucks, causing slow ball for us, so I was constantly waiting for the ball to come out.
“So I don’t know. Maybe we can clean a bit better, or maybe the ref can make a few calls there. But they did well and I think we can speed it up next week and play a bit better.” - Cape Times
