Archbishop grieves fire, shooting victims
Cape Town Archbishop Makgoba has sent his condlences to Mitchells Plain fire victims, and those of the Orlando shooting.
|||Cape Town - The Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, on Monday extended his condolences to the families of the eight people who died in a fire at a Mitchells Plain home at the weekend, as well as the Orlando shooting in the United States which claimed 50 lives.
“On my own behalf and on behalf of the Anglican Church, I convey our deepest condolences to the relatives of those who died in the fire in Eastridge, Mitchells Plain, at the weekend. We also pray for the recovery of those in hospital,” Makgoba said on Monday.
Patrick Abrahams lost three of his children, three grandchildren and his nephew in the fire that gutted his house on Macbeth Street in Eastridge on Saturday morning just after 8:30am. His daughter’s boyfriend and a friend’s son also lost their lives in the blaze. Abrahams’ daughter was in hospital, fighting for her life.
“My pained heart goes out to the Abrahams family for the devastating loss they have suffered. We pray also for the whole Eastridge community at this time of trauma,” Makgoba said.
He also expressed his condolences to the families of those affected by the Orlando, Florida, shooting in which a gunman, Oman Mateen, killed 50 people at a gay club in the early hours of Sunday morning and injured scores more after allegedly pledging allegiance to the Islamic State.
“We also pray for the families of those gunned down and killed in the terrible massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, yesterday. We pray for the recovery of those injured, for the LGBT community and the people of Orlando,” said Makgoba.
