The chairman of the Yoruba Unity Forum, Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi (retd.), has described the attempts made by the Senate President Bukola Saraki to stop his trials as shameful and undeserving of a public figure.

Gbonigi in an interview the Punch on Wednesday, June 29, explained that any public office holder’s attempt to stop his trial was “a proof to suspect that such a public office holder had something to cover up”.

He said the ongoing court trials of the Senate president is ridiculing the image of the country.

“I feel that the Senate President’s trials are ridiculing Nigeria. For the Senate President to move from the first court to the appeal court and then to the Supreme Court to ensure that he is not investigated is not fine. I felt shameful. Why should he go to that length? If what they accused him of is not true, why can’t he allow them (Code of Conduct Bureau) to do their job?

“It is the duty of anyone who is accused of committing crimes to show all of us that he is innocent rather than blame the anti-graft agencies. If anybody does not want to be investigated, it is a proof to suspect that such a person has something to cover up,” Gbonigi said.

The elder statesman also demanded for the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, to apologise to Nigerians for writing a petition to the United Nations, European Union, United States, and other foreign missions, over an alleged witch-hunt of opposition leaders.

Meanwhile, leaders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti state on Thursday, June 30, protested in Ido Ekiti against alleged subtle plot by federal government to silent Governor Ayodele Fayose as the lone opposition voice in the country.

Party leaders the rally declared that they were ready to defend the governor with the last drop of their blood and threatened to recall any lawmaker found working with the opposition to hatch any impeachment plot against the governor.
