Something bad has happened to Kuje Prison chief after jail break

– Kuje Prison chief Musa Tanko has been removed following last week jail break

– Tanko will be investigated by officers from the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) over the escape of the two inmates Maxwell Ajukwu and Solomon Amodu

– The two inmates have not been found as at the time of this publication

Following the jail break that occurred at Kuje Medium prisons last Friday June 24, in which two inmates escaped, Ahmed Jafa’aru, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Prison Service, has ordered the removal of the officer in-charge of the prison, Musa Tanko, and also instituted a probe panel over the matter.

According to a report on The Punch, Tanko will be investigated by officers from the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) over the escape of the two inmates Maxwell Ajukwu and Solomon Amodu, who were standing trial for murder and escaped from the facility by scaling the fence.

As at the time of this publication, the two remain at large.

A source said: “For now, only the officer in charge [Mr. Tanko] has been transferred out of the prisons, but we don’t know if other senior officers like the yard master and the officer on duty would also be redeployed out of Kuje prisons. For now, everyone is waiting with bated breath to see the next line of action by the authorities.”

Francis Enobore, the NPS public relations officer disclosed that should Tanko and others be indicted for the escape, they will face more serious sanctions than redeployment.

Enobore said: “The management of the prisons service is taking the matter seriously, and any indicted officer will be severely punished, so transfer cannot be the punishment for the escape of inmates.”

He added that the investigations are on-going and that appropriate sanctions would not be imposed until Minister of Interior Abdurahaman Dambazzau reviews the investigators’ report on the matter.

He said: “The management of the prisons service is taking the matter seriously and any indicted officer will be severely punished, so transfer cannot be the punishment for escape of inmates,” he stated.

Dambazzau had on Monday, June 25, attributed the incident at the facility to security lapses, which he said he brought to the notice of the authorities, but added that nothing was done about it.

Hnece, the minister ordered an immediate appraisal of all prison facilities in Nigeria.
