Motoring north across the Chesapeake Bay at 40 mph just before nightfall, the boat's hull struck a hard wake, knocking Lauren Conner overboard into the water. The boat circled around. Those on board frantically searched in the fading light but couldn't see Conner nor hear her screams drowned out by a stiff wind.
