Turkey airport attack: Nigeria beefs up security around airports

– The world is still in shock over the recent airport attack in Turkey

– The attack has made countries around the world beef the security around their airports

– Nigeria is not lagging behind in this aspect as the federal government has responded swiftly

Following the twin explosions and gunfire that recently rocked Istanbul’s Ataturk international airport in Turkey, that left 36 people dead and more than 40 people wounded, Nigerian authorities has responded swiftly by beefing up security at major airports.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) yesterday, June 30 said modern technology, including the installation of 3D screening machines, metal detectors and Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, had been deployed at all Nigerian airports to forestall any form of security breach.

According to The Guardian, FAAN urged passengers to be wary of strangers and suspicious activities around the airports especially as the Sallah holiday approaches.

FAAN has urged passengers in Nigerian airports to be cautious and report suspicious persons

Yakubu Dati, the general manager, corporate affairs of FAAN advised all airport users, especially passengers and airline operators, to be security conscious at the airports, following the spate of recent security breaches, including bomb blasts, at some airports around the world.

His words: “Passengers are advised not to accept any luggage from anyone and to report any suspicious movements or behaviour immediately to aviation security personnel in the terminals.”

According to The Punch, he also stated that metal walk-through detectors had been deployed in airports, while adding that some terminals had been expanded to provide more space for activities.

Meanwhile, the presidency has reacted to the attack in Turkey. Bashir Ahmad, personal assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on new media, said the Istanbul attack was a very sad incident. He prayed that may the souls of those who died rest in peace.

In the same vein, Nigeria’s former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan has condoled with the people and government of Turkey over the attack. Dr Jonathan urged the world unite to defeat terror wherever it is.
