Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state has said buyers and sellers transacting business along the road will be fined.

The governor on Friday, July 1, as a celebrity guest on Your-View talk show on TV Continental to discuss issues pertinent to Lagos state, said: “Both buyers and sellers in traffic will pay a fine of N90,000 or face a jail term.”

Ambode speaking on the mayhem that happened in Maryland on Wednesday, June 29, said: “The law does not support hawking, what we need to do is map out a way out for them.” 

He also said he is dedicated to a life of service to the people, adding that this second year, the state government will focus on the health sector, youths and the elderly.

The governor mentioned that he is trying his best to give the citizens of Lagos state the best.

Violence erupted around Maryland, Anthony area of Lagos state following the death of a traffic hawker who was hit by a BRT bus.

The street hawker, who was trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), had attempted to cross the road before being hit by the truck, which was erroneously thought to be a BRT Bus.

As a result, hoodlums armed with sticks and stones, immediately descended on some BRT buses plying the route. But the state government in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said that contrary to the information being circulated in the social media that the street hawker was hit by a BRT bus, it was a truck belonging to a soft drink company that unfortunately hit the boy.
