The government of Adamawa state in a recent move to end the insistent clash between Fulani herdsmen and farmers has mapped out 30 grazing reserves for cattle in the state.

Speaking in an interview with online newspaper, Premium times, the Adamawa state commissioner for livestock and development, Isa Salihu said the grazing reserves is in line with the federal government’s plan quell the crisis between farmers and herdsmen in various states.

Salihu said: “We have 72 grazing reserves in the state, out of which 30 are already gazetted.”

He said the Adamawa state has also registered 1.5 million cattle, a step forward to making the grazing reserves a reality.

“Some 5,000 hectares of land was allocated to Federal Government for the establishment of National Grazing reserves. And the state government is willing to allocate more additional lands for the programme,” Salihu said.

He said the state recognizes that the neglect of the livestock sector has contributed to the clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the country.

“The only solution to the problem is the establishment of permanent grazing reserves and ranches where the animals would be restricted from roaming,” he said.

For many years now farmer across various states of Nigeria have alleged the destruction of the farm products by Fulani herdsmen.

These herdsmen in their many attacks have killed thousands of Nigerians in various communities.

The most recent and wide spread of the attacks is the killing of over 300 residents in Agatu local government of Benue state.

Another attack is the killing of scores of villages in Nimbo, a community in Udi local government of Enugu state.

While the farmers have consistently accused the Fulani herdsmen, the presidency has also claimed that the attacks were perpetrated by foreign herdsmen and not Fulanis.
