Ex-Giants infielder Matt Duffy: ‘It’s going to hurt for a while’
Matt Duffy has all the emotions one would expect after being traded from the team that brought him to the majors and brought him a World Series ring — the pain of separation but the anticipation of a new start with a team that really wants him.
“It’s going to hurt for a while,” Duffy said via text Monday after the Giants traded him and two prospects to Tampa Bay for starter Matt Moore.
Duffy will play shortstop for the Rays, his original position.
Longoria was the starting shortstop for Long Beach State, and Duffy, a Long Beach high school kid, was at a baseball camp held on the university campus.
Duffy was taking grounders at short and was stunned to see Longoria emerge with his gear and ask if they could take grounders side by side.
Even though Duffy’s name had been mentioned in trade rumors, he said news of the deal left him surprised, shocked, all of the above.
