49ers’ bulked-up Colin Kaepernick ditches high school look
In an effort to regain the weight he lost during the offseason, the 49ers’ quarterback said he went through grueling workouts. Kaepernick and Gabbert have split first-team snaps through the first two practices of training camp, which have featured mostly short passes. Gabbert has completed 10 of 16 passes, with wide receiver Bruce Ellington dropping one of his attempts Monday. Defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil said his depth chart is “written in sand,” but it appears safe to say cornerback Jimmie Ward will have a prominent role. Ward, a first-round pick who played nickel cornerback in his first two seasons, has opened training camp as a starting outside cornerback opposite Tramaine Brock. “That’s really hard on a guy to have to switch mentalities from being an outside corner to then come inside in the slot,” O’Neil said.
