The federal government has confirmed the resumption of payments of monthly stipends to ex-militants in response to sustained attacks on oil facilities which have dropped crude production to a 30-year low.

According to Bloomberg, the payment of stipends resumed on Monday, August 1, after coordinator of the presidential amnesty program, Paul Boroh told ex-militants in an e-mailed statement that their delayed stipends would resume.

NAIJ.com could not immediately confirm at press time if payments were made on Monday as promised, but Boroh had assured the militants in the email that there was nothing to fear because the presidency understands their plight and “President Muhammadu Buhari appreciates their patience”.

Nigeria’s oil wells and pipelines are presently under heavy attacks again from rebel groups after several years of relative calm. The attacks resumed after President Buhari ended security contracts and payments that had turned earlier militants into protectors.

NAIJ.com recalls that the special adviser to President Buhari on Niger Delta, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (rtd) had expressed worries over the federal government’s late payment of stipends to ex-militants in the region.

“I must say that the hiccups which were brought to my attention during the long public holiday by the Central Bank of Nigeria have been sorted out,” he said.

He added: “I want your cooperation as the present administration under President Muhammadu Buhari proffers lasting solution to the problems in the region.”
