Commissioner orders police to face protesting workers; see what happened after (photos)

Five persons have been hospitalised after they were accosted by policemen in Jos during a protest.

Daily Trust reports that the protesters were workers of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).

The protests took place on Tuesday, July 2 in front of the main entrance of the hospital following a peaceful protest which occurred a day before.

The workers were protesting the non-implementation of the agreement signed by the hospital management in June and the now insistence of the hospital management to implement the ‘no work, no pay’ policy only after the workers had called off their strike in June, therefore denying them April and May salaries.

The police who were called in used tear gas on the protesting workers after they could not move them away from the entrance.

Mustapha Kabiru who is the chairman of the union said that the assistant police commissioner, operation gave the order for the use of gas canisters and alleged that over 20 canisters had been used directly at protesters.

He urged the federal government to shut down the hospital as “we cannot guarantee what will happen tomorrow because our people have been molested.”

Vwamse Frederick who is the treasurer of the union said “they asked for the Chairman and the Secretary but they were not around; so I tried to call the chairman but they said I was making calls in front of the Assistant Commissioner and they started beating me.”

A week ago, some youths protesting the murder of a first class monarch were attacked by security operatives in Jos.

Soldiers serving with the Special Task Force (STF) on Jos crisis on Thursday, July 21 opened fire on rampaging youth who blocked a road in Bokkos in protest of the killing of a monarch and a night attack there Wednesday.
