With Hansen smothered, Cal looks to other receivers
Cal head coach Sonny Dykes spent much of this week’s preparation time, pleading for one his X receivers to step up for Saturday’s game against Arizona State.
Freshman Demetris Robertson got Cal on the board with a 19-yard touchdown catch, and Brandon Singleton grabbed the first touchdown reception of his career — a 23-yarder that gave the Bears 14-point lead 18 seconds before halftime.
Sun Devils corner Kareem Orr generally followed Chad Hansen, the nation’s leading receiver, all over the field — creating opportunities for the X receivers and slot receivers.
Cal kicker Matt Anderson, who is among the Lou Groza Award contenders, saw his streak of 17 consecutive made field goals snapped.
The junior came back and drilled a 20-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, and he added a 47-yarder in the third quarter.
