A Portrait of My Ego as a Big Black Dog
Several years ago, I received a postcard from a friend who was travelling in Scotland. The picture on the card showed dozens of Scottish family crests, many of which looked as if they had been hastily contrived for postcard purposes. Clustered together in a three-by-five-inch space was a clamorous array of rampant lions, griffins, serpents, and dragons, each populating a landscape bristling with thistles and heather.
