8 Nigerian dishes that will make you say NO to rice this Christmas (photos)

Nigeria is a country that is blessed with nutritious dishes from the various tribes in the country.

Since the restriction of rice importation through land borders, the price of the commodity has been on a high side.

However, this is the season patronage of imported goods like rice, groundnut oil, etc are always at its highest demand. To enjoy your Christmas with family, here are 6 nutritious Nigerian local dishes for you.

1. Efo riro with pounded yam

Efo riro is a rich and fragrant vegetable soup from the southern region of Nigeria. The richness of this dish tells in its look.

This lefty vegetable is also a classic Yoruba dish that will compliment the season of celebration.

2. Edikangikong with fufu

Edikangikong is a leafy vegetable soup from the Cross River region of Nigeria.

3. Amala with ewedu

This is a dish common among the southern part of Nigeria. Amala is the composition of yam flour while ewedu is the green leafy plant, which is blended with other spices.

4. Yam porridge garnished with vegetable

Yam porridge is commonly made with yams, as Nigeria is known to be one of the top producers of yam in the world. This Nigerian dish is usually garnished with vegetables to compliment its taste.

5. Ofada rice with stew

Ofada rice is the local rice in Nigeria, it is unpolished and it is nutritious. This Nigerian meal is mostly eaten with a special stew.

6. Obono soup with Eba

This Nigerian delicacy, Ogbono soup is primarily made from ground ogbono (African mango) seeds with other ingredients like palm oil, stock fish and spices.

7. Banga soup

This Nigerian dish is commonly associated with the Delta region, particularly the Urhobo ethnic group. This palm fruit-based soup is prepared with fresh ingredients like fish, seafood and assorted meats.

8. Egusi soup

Egusi (ground melon seed) is usually cooked in palm oil, with added leafy greens and meat or seafood and seasoned with ground crayfish.

The leaves  used includes, ewuro (bitterleaf) and ugwu (fluted pumpkin leaf) are most commonly used. This finger licking Nigerian dish could be served with iyan (pounded yam), amala or eba this season.
