Semyon Varlamov’s 51 saves help Avs shake off loss
Semyon Varlamov made 51 saves, helping visiting Colorado rebound from a miserable loss with a 3-1 victory over the Maple Leafs on Sunday night.
The Leafs had 16 of the first 19 shots, hogging the puck in the Colorado zone shift after shift.
The netminder, who gave up six goals in the loss to Montreal, was stellar in stopping all 21 first-period shots, a season high for the Leafs.
Winnipeg rookie Patrik Laine shot the puck into his own net midway through the third period, the decisive goal in host Edmonton’s win.
The Oilers’ Mark Letestu was credited with his second goal of the game when Laine fired the rebound of Letestu’s slap shot directly into his own wide-open goal.
The 18-year-old ranks third in the NHL with 17 goals and is an early front-runner for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie.
Antti Raanta stopped 19 shots for his second straight shutout as host New York won its third in a row.
Raanta, starting for the third time in four nights, got his sixth career shutout and improved to 8-1-0 with a 1.65 goals-against average in 10 starts this season.
