‘Zootopia’ Wins Annie Award for Best Animated Feature
The 44th annual Annie Awards are underway in Los Angeles, honoring the year’s best in animated film and television.
Broadcasting live on Facebook from UCLA’s Royce Hall, the event saw “Zootopia” beat out “Kubo and the Two Strings,” “Finding Dory,” “Moana” and “Kung Fu Panda 3” for Best Animated Feature.
Rich Moore and Byron Howard also took Best Director for the film, an allegory for racism using the animal kingdom in a modern city.
Zootopia”‘s male lead, Jason Bateman, tied for best voice performance for his role as a smooth-talking fox — he shares the prize with 15-year-old breakout and Disney coworker Auli’i Cravalho of “Moana.
In the 15 years that the Oscars Best Animated Feature category has existed, the film that won the Oscar has also won the top Annie Award 10 times.
The juried awards went to Dale Baer, Caroline Leaf and Mamoru Oshii for career achievement, Bill and Sue Kroyer for significant charitable impact and Google Spotlight’s Virtual Reality Platform for technical advancement, as well as a special award to the documentary “Life, Animated” and certificates of merit to Leslie Ezeh and Gary Perkovac.
