A street and a square were renamed after the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro and the assassinated Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov, in Moscow, Wednesday. The newly named 'Square of Fidel Castro' is located in the Sokol area in the north-west of the Russian capital. Andrei Karlov Street is located in the so-called diplomatic quartre some two kilometres (1.2 miles) from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Former Cuban leader Castro passed away at the age of 90 in Havana on November 25, 2016. He served as prime minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976, and then as president from 1976 to 2008, in which time he survived geopolitical tensions and scores of US assassination attempts. In 2008, he handed the reins of power to his younger brother Raul Castro and slowly withdrew from the front-line of Cuban politics. Russian Ambassador to Turkey, Karlov, was assassinated during the opening ceremony of the photo exhibition 'Russia as Seen by the Turks' in Ankara on December 19, 2016. In 2016, the city's Contemporary Arts Centre where Karlov lost his life and a street in Ankara where the Russian embassy is located were renamed after the late diplomat.
