Brook: I’m in a better place than Spence

Kell Brook says experience will make a difference in his big fight this weekend, and that he has more of it than Errol Spence.

As the days continue to dwindle down until Saturday’s big welterweight title fight between Kell Brook and Errol Spence Jr, Spence says he’s feeling as good as ever — despite how tough his weight cut has been. Brook tells ESPN that he’s “driven himself into the ground” to make weight for the fight and that weight won’t be an issue on Saturday.

"I've signed to make welterweight and there's no point in crying about it. You have seen the shape I'm in, I've done it.”

And although Spence is the betting favorite going into this fight, Brook says that his experience exceeds that of Spence, and that he’ll use that to his advantage on fight night.

"I'm in a better place than he is. We will find out all about him on May 27. I believe it will be one of my toughest fights, but he's not been in with anyone like me. It will definitely be up there as one of my best wins."

Spence, however, counters Brook’s beliefs by recalling how he’s had in-the-ring experience with some the top names in the sport, which only bolsters his confidence in competing at the highest level of the sport.

"I sparred with Floyd too, I did great work, it was tit for tat. I never imagined myself sparring with Floyd Mayweather that early on in my career. I've also sparred with Adrien Broner and Lamont Peterson, which were great experiences.

"When I sparred Floyd, I earned his respect. Now he will call me on Facetime, he will text me to check up on me and see how I'm doing and stuff like that."

So while we can’t be certain as to whose experience will carry the day, we can be sure that we’ll soon be getting another 5-star match-up between to top welterweights in their primes. That’s good enough for me, and considering the style match-up and the implications for even bigger fights going forward, I think it’s a safe bet we get a real firecracker on Saturday night.
