Cucujus clavipes

Under the bark of dead trees in North America, Cucujus clavipes spreads its flattened body. Found from Canada to the United States, it inhabits temperate and boreal forests, slipping into crevices to hunt larvae and mites. Its larvae are resistant to extreme cold, surviving temperatures below –140°F (-70°C) thanks to cryoprotective mechanisms.
