My message to everyone who made marriage equality a reality
When I came out in 1999, a relative said to me, with compassion and concern, “I’m just worried that you’ll be lonely for the rest of your life.” I agreed. Given the world then, it felt like that by saying “I’m a gay dude,” I had announced to my straight friends and family that my life was going to take a different shape than theirs. That the photos in the album of my happiest moments wouldn’t look like theirs. That my life would somehow have less permanence, would be just a series of encounters, hopefully with a good relationship along the way.
