Tehran (dpa) - German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived Saturday on his first visit to Tehran with an agenda including implementation of the international nuclear agreement and the conflict in Syria. He was scheduled to meet Iranian President Hassan Rowhani. On the first extended visit by a German foreign minister in 12 years, Steinmeier is urging Iran to quickly meet its obligations including allowing nuclear inspections under the July deal in which Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States agreed to the gradual lifting of economic sanctions. The 10-year agreement, which takes effect Sunday, allows Iran to maintain a civilian nuclear programme but requires the country to show that it is not seeking a weapon."Now it‘s Iran‘s turn to meet the requirements that were agreed in exchange for an agreement to lift sanctions," Steinmeier said.A member of the Social Democratic Party, a junior partner in Germany‘s ruling coalition, Steinmeier is pushing for Iran to help find a political solution to the long-running Syrian conflict.Iran and Russia are the most important allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.Steinmeier is due to continue Sunday to Saudi Arabia, Iran‘s chief rival in the Gulf, before continuing Tuesday to Jordan.
