Australia declares emergency as wildfires continue to rage

In Australia, catastrophic conditions continue as raging wildfires rip through large parts of the country. New South Wales, Australia's most populous state, has declared an emergency. The threat level is now "catastrophic" as 2,000 firefighters battle around 100 fires that threaten hundreds of thousands of people. Imtiaz Tyab reports.

Trump begins vacation in Florida amid national security concerns

President Trump began his two-week trip to Florida on Friday night, after signing a $738 billion defense bill for next year. But Mr. Trump arrived in Florida under an ominous cloud courtesy of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who recently promised a "Christmas gift" to the U.S. in response to its refusal to lift sanctions on North Korea. U.S. intelligence officials tell CBS News a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile test could occur soon most likely after the first of the year. Chip Reid reports.

Trump administration aims to cut “SNAP” programs, affecting millions

Thirty-six million Americans depend on food stamps under the government’s “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,” known as “SNAP.” But this week, the Trump administration moved to cut some of them off. The changes would cause an estimated 3.7 million Americans to lose their benefits. A multi-state lawsuit could be in the works by state attorneys general.

In the old days people might have turned to the government or to charities such as churches for help; today the first place many people seem to turn to is GoFundMe, a crowdsourcing website, where anyone can appeal to the public to contribute money for pretty much anything – medical bills, disaster relief, funeral expenses, acts of kindness. Foster father, many times over

Back in 2001, divorced dad-of-two Lamont Thomas took on a foster kid named Michael Perez. Thomas eventually adopted Perez, who now works as a nurse. Turns out, that was just the beginning. Over the next 15 years Thomas fostered more than 30 kids in Buffalo, New York, adopting five of them. Recently, when a family of five siblings was in danger of being split up, Thomas knew what he had to do. Steve Hartman reports.
