Italy to deploy frigate Martinengo to bolster defence of Cyprus
Italy will send the naval frigate Federico Martinengo to waters near Cyprus as part of a coordinated European armada to reinforce the island’s security amid escalating tensions linked to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
Italian officials confirmed on Friday that the vessel will deploy with at least 160 members of the Italian navy as part of a joint security presence alongside forces from Spain, France and the Netherlands.
According to the Italian defence ministry, the mission forms part of a broader European response following security incidents near Cyprus earlier this week, including a drone strike targeting the British military base at Akrotiri.
Italian authorities said the number of personnel involved in the deployment could vary depending on operational requirements and the final configuration of the vessel participating in the mission.
The frigate Federico Martinengo is a modern warship designed for operations including maritime security, surveillance and defensive operations against aerial threats.
Last year the vessel completed a deployment in the Red Sea as part of the EU naval mission Aspides, where it was tasked with protecting commercial shipping from attacks by Houthi forces before returning to the Taranto naval base in southern Italy.
Italy’s move comes as several European naval forces position ships in the eastern Mediterranean in response to the deteriorating regional security environment.
Spain has also confirmed it will deploy the naval air defence frigate Cristobal Colon to the region, while the French vessel Languedoc and Greek warships, Kimon and Psara, are already operating near Cyprus with radar and missile defence capabilities designed to detect and intercept drones and other airborne threats.
The deployments follow the drone strike earlier this week on the British sovereign base area at Akrotiri, an incident that prompted a wider security response by European partners seeking to reinforce the island’s defensive perimeter.
European governments have framed the naval deployments as a precautionary measure intended to strengthen regional stability and support Cyprus as tensions across the Middle East continue to intensify.
