Joe Doucet creates table from discarded fridges and electronics

American designer Joe Doucet has collaborated with surface manufacturer The Good Plastic Company to create a table from discarded fridges and electronics.

Launched at New York's inaugural Shelter fair during NYCxDesign, the OLO table was made from Polygood – a material made from 100 per cent recycled plastic sourced from scrap fridges and electronics.

Assembled with CNC joinery, the simple piece of furniture has two semicircular legs that support a single table top.

"The scale was chosen to give it presence," Doucet told Dezeen.

"It feels substantial without overwhelming the space, and it lets the material speak for itself."

It was launched during this year's NYCxDesign showcase

Polygood has thermoformable properties that differentiate it from traditional recycled materials. These properties informed the design according to Doucet.

"When I learned Polygood could be sculpted and thermoformed in ways most recycled materials can't, the idea for the table came together quickly," he told Dezeen.

"It was a way to express all of that in a single, bold piece."

Inspired by the theme of circularity, Doucet set out to design a bold, sculptural piece that shows recycled materials can still be refined and versatile.

"Circularity is about more than recycling. It's about continuity and renewal. I wanted the form to echo that idea, with lines that feel fluid and complete," Doucet explained

"The smoothness also speaks to the idea that sustainability doesn't have to be rough or compromised. It can be soft, elegant, and enduring," he continued.

"The challenge was to move beyond what people expect from recycled sheet materials, and treat it as something worthy of sculpture and permanence."

Other furniture designs recently featured on Dezeen include a collection of homeware and furniture designed by Max Lamb for Bali's Potato Head hotel out of its waste materials and a chair that doubles as a record player by London studio Pirajean Lees.
