In March 1935 British writer Lawrence Durrell and his wife, his mother and younger siblings, travelled from Britain to the Greek island Corfu in the ionian sea, Lawrence described it at the time in letters to a friend as a reaction to the stuffy and “stifling” post-war British culture of the time.
