India's school of maharajas now educating new elite

Its history echoes with grandeur. The first student, the son of the Maharajah of Alwar, arrived in 1875 with pomp, seated in a palanquin and accompanied by 300 servants. "We try to preserve a certain tradition of the past," said Saurav Sinha, principal of the school in Rajasthan's Ajmer. "But only to the extent it enriches our culture, and lets our students remember who they are, and where they come from." Nicknamed the "Eton of the East" and modelled after England's elite boarding schools, Mayo was founded by the British viceroy... Читать дальше...

With cash and aid, Saudi Arabia pursues soft power push in Syria

Since the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad in December, Saudi Arabia has showered the new leadership with millions of dollars in assistance and investment pledges in the hope of steering it further into the kingdom's sphere of influence, analysts told AFP. Syria was a battleground for outside powers throughout the conflict, with Iran and Russia backing Assad, and Turkey and the United States supporting various armed groups. Guinea to vote in constitutional referendum boycotted by opposition

The vote, which Guineans and the international community have been awaiting for years, opens the way for stalled political elections in the West African nation. The country has been ruled with an iron fist by junta chief General Mamady Doumbouya since he overthrew elected civilian president Alpha Conde in 2021. Some 6.7 million Guineans will be able to cast a ballot, out of a population of approximately 14.5 million people, when polling stations open at 8:00 am (same time GMT) on Sunday. After polls close at 6:00 pm... Читать дальше...

"In the last year and a half, we've seen a big surge... of people applying for apprenticeships," said Simon Cundey, managing director and owner of Henry Poole & Co, one of the oldest bespoke tailors on Savile Row. For years, apprenticeships at the street's exclusive houses were informal and even unwelcome, with... Читать дальше...

Warmer climate boosts north German vineyards, for now

The 75-year-old owner, Manfred Lindicke, said that rising global temperatures over the decades had helped his grapes sweeten and ripen earlier. "When I started here in 1996, we used to harvest around October 1," he said. "Now we start on September 1." The climate crisis may be wreaking havoc globally on island nations, deserts and coastal regions, and intensifying disasters from droughts and wildfires to hurricanes and floods. But in some regions, businesses have benefited from some of its impacts... Читать дальше...

French nuclear waste project sparks protest

The project, known as CIGEO, is meant to build an underground storage centre outside the northeastern village of Bure to bury the most dangerous waste from nuclear power plants and hold it for hundreds of thousands of years. Organisers said 2,000 people had taken to the street in Bure to protest the plan by the National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management (ANDRA) -- though authorities put the number of demonstrators at around 700. "Get out, ANDRA!" protesters chanted under heavy police presence... Читать дальше...
