BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Cpt. Brett Stassi Jr. has been released from the hospital, according to the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office.

The announcement came exactly one month after Stassi was shot at the Iberville Parish courthouse.

IPSO said his recovery will remain ongoing at home. Stassi was injured in a shooting that took the life of Deputy Charles Riley. He spent time in the ICU while at the hospital and at one point had to be put back on a ventilator.

His father, Sheriff Brett Stassi, had this to say about the response from everyone:

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of prayers, encouragement, and support from the community, fellow law enforcement agencies, and first responders during this difficult time. Your kindness and compassion have meant more than words can express.”

“We would like to offer a special thank you to the staff at Ochsner Iberville for their extraordinary efforts the night of the incident. Many off-duty staff members reported to work after hearing what happened, joining the on-duty team to provide urgent care and support. Their dedication and willingness to act without hesitation is something we will never forget. We also want to thank the outstanding medical team at Our Lady of the Lake for the excellent care provided to Captain Stassi during his hospitalization. We are also grateful to Acadian Ambulance for their swift response and professionalism. We will always be thankful.”

Various blood drives took place following the shooting, and IPSO noted the tremendous support shown by the community since the shooting.

“All of the kind gestures and the overwhelming response to the recent blood drives were amazing,” Sheriff Stassi said. “The turnout and generosity of donors was truly remarkable and a reflection of the strength and unity of our community. Your support reminds us why we are proud to serve the people of Iberville Parish every day.”

The sheriff asked the community to continue praying for and supporting the family of the fallen officer, as well as for the recovery of his son.

“This has been extremely difficult for them, and for our entire staff, but we will heal together,” he said.
