Topeka Public Schools ban cell phones during school day

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Starting this school year, all Topeka USD 501 schools will adopt a "cell phone-free instructional day" policy. This change follows recommendations from the state board of education.

The district posted the new policy on its website earlier this month.

According to the new policy, Topeka high school students are to keep their phones off and away from first bell to last to support a focused learning environment. This includes all personal electronic communication devices including smart phones, smart watches, tablets, personal computers, earbuds, and other devices. You can find the full list here.

The policy states violations will result in progressive disciplinary actions including confiscation of devices, parent meetings, and potential suspensions. The new rules may not be applicable to school field trips or other activities away from school grounds.

In December, the Kansas Board of Education issued new recommendations for school districts regarding cell phone usage. A blue-ribbon task force made up of students, teachers, administrators and other educational representatives investigated the non-academic use of cell phones in the state's classrooms and formed the recommendations.
