New 'History of Topeka' episode discusses city's oldest cemeteries and the people in them
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The third episode of the City of Topeka's "History of Topeka" docuseries is all about the oldest cemeteries and those buried in them.
The City of Topeka began its docuseries in August to highlight powerful stories, pivotal moments and inspiring people that have shaped the city into what it is today. The newest episode honors the citizens who built the foundations of the city and the history of the oldest cemeteries.
"Cyrus Packard is one of the few veterans from the War of 1812 to be buried in Rochester Cemetery," said Katie Keckeisen, a local history librarian. "He also is said to have run one of the underground railroad stations. While there is a lot of lore and legend surrounding the cemetery, it is the true story of those who are buried who, those who lived, worked and died in Topeka and called it home that make the cemetery rich in history."
This episode of the docuseries was made with help from the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, the Kansas Historical Society and the Historic Topeka Cemetery. You can watch the episode here on the City of Topeka Facebook page.
