I-35 southbound at E. Cesar Chavez reopens after deadly crash
AUSTIN (KXAN) — A deadly crash at Interstate 35 southbound at East Cesar Chavez in downtown Austin had previously shut down lanes of the highway early Wednesday morning, according to Austin Police. Traffic backups stretched for miles.
But Austin Police said in an 8:30 a.m. update the main lanes were back open, and the crash was cleared.
Before the crash was cleared, police said several downtown entrance ramps to southbound I-35 were also being closed off in addition to the main lanes being blocked. The Texas Department of Transportation said traffic was being diverted to the frontage road.
Police said the deadly crash involved a pedestrian and occurred around 5:23 a.m. Austin-Travis County EMS confirmed medics pronounced one adult dead at the scene.
The agency had previously asked drivers to take an alternate route.
