GE Apartment

GE Apartment is a minimalist apartment located in Valencia, Spain, designed by Balzar Arquitectos. This 300-square-meter renovation and interior design project next to Valencia’s emblematic Mercado de Colón stands within a series of modernist buildings from the late 19th century whose façades rich in ironwork, stained glass, and moldings speak of a time when Valencia experienced cultural and aesthetic awakening driven by the vigor of its bourgeoisie during the age of floral motifs, exalting local identity, and dialogue with nature that inspired Art Nouveau.

The GE Apartment was born as a renovation that does not seek to erase the past but to engage in conversation with it. The project begins with deep respect for protected preexisting elements including moldings, ceramic floors, stained glass, and original woodwork, weaving around them a new narrative of a contemporary classic. Each room becomes a meeting point between centuries where the historical and modern coexist in harmony without nostalgia or excess, demonstrating how architectural renovation can honor heritage building fabric while introducing contemporary spatial requirements and aesthetic sensibilities.

The home embraces a wabi-sabi aesthetic celebrating the beauty of the imperfect and ephemeral. Natural materials including travertine, wood, lime, linen, and wool evoke the calm and honesty that come with the passage of time. Textures speak louder than colors while the light, filtered and warm, makes the invisible visible through the serenity of an authentic space. This material restraint demonstrates Japanese-influenced design philosophy valuing patina and material authenticity over pristine surfaces requiring constant maintenance.

The furniture reinforces this timeless narrative. Together with the owners, who are true design enthusiasts, a carefully curated selection of vintage pieces from Nekonato Gallery has been arranged featuring works by Percival Lafer, Sergio Rodrigues, and Alvar Aalto, which engage in dialogue with contemporary designs by Vincent Van Duysen and Viabizzuno. This cross-generational furniture curation demonstrates how residential interiors can function as galleries where design history becomes lived experience rather than museum display.
