Ana & Oscar
Ana & Oscar is a minimalist apartment renovation located in Barcelona, Spain, designed by MH.AP. Positioned where Barcelona begins its climb toward Avinguda Tibidabo, this top-floor residence occupies a rare geographic threshold – a point where the city’s urban fabric meets the ascending landscape of Mount Collserola. The 193-square-meter interior, flanked by nearly 100 square meters of terraces at opposite ends, presented an unusual programmatic freedom: designing a home for two people where conventional notions of privacy could give way to spatial generosity and visual continuity.
The architects structured the plan along a north-south axis, establishing a clear separation between restorative and collective zones. Bedrooms and bathrooms anchor the eastern side, while the kitchen, dining area, and living room open westward toward the expansive terrace and the sweeping view that stretches from Collserola across the city to the Mediterranean. This organization is not merely functional – it responds to Barcelona’s climate and topography, acknowledging how outdoor space in this context becomes genuinely habitable for much of the year rather than occasional.
The main bedroom operates as a flexible volume defined by wood sliding panels at both ends. These panels allow the space to connect either to the living area or to an open-plan bathroom and dressing zone, creating a fluid domestic choreography that adjusts to different patterns of use. The approach reflects a contemporary understanding of how privacy in shared living can be calibrated rather than absolute, where spatial boundaries become adjustable thresholds instead of fixed walls.
Material continuity reinforces the conceptual dissolution between interior and exterior. The same warm, tactile surfaces extend from inside to outside, establishing a unified atmosphere that refuses the typical hard distinction between conditioned and open-air space. On the west terrace, a pergola supporting solar panels provides shade for an outdoor kitchen and a substantial built-in table finished with local green tiles – elements that function as genuine extensions of the interior program rather than symbolic gestures toward outdoor living. A small pool completes this exterior zone, contributing to the Mediterranean character that guides the entire design.
