Mont-Cenis Apartment
The Mont-Cenis Apartment is a minimalist renovation by the Paris-based architecture practice, Rosso Studio. The project reimagines a compact studio apartment as a refined contemporary dwelling, defined by spatial clarity and a carefully layered material palette. Designed to open up the space and maximize natural light, the intervention removes the apartment’s former compartmentalized layout in favor of a plan that feels both expansive and intimate.
At the center of the apartment is a stained wood screen, a defining architectural element that structures the interior while introducing warmth. The screen separates the raised sleeping area from the living space, offering privacy while doubling as additional storage thanks to its display shelving. The sleeping zone is subtly elevated and marked by a step clad in black brick tiles, paired with soft carpeting that provides a tactile cue and enhances the sense of retreat.
The living area unfolds toward two street-facing windows, fully embracing daylight and views of the Parisian sky. Here, a small table and stool create an additional place to sit or work. The kitchen is conceived as a sculptural, monolithic stone volume, its weight and texture contrasting with the surrounding white walls and columns, while metal shelving adds another layer of material depth. The former kitchen now houses a minimalist bathroom finished in stainless steel and white tile, reinforcing the project’s restrained material palette.
By preserving the original parquet flooring and pairing it with bold, contemporary interventions, the Mont Cenis Apartment reflects Rosso Studio’s practice of rehabilitating existing spaces through thoughtful layouts that enhance light and everyday use.
