Kitchen Trolley is a minimalist mobile kitchen located in Seoul, South Korea, designed by BYBIGTABLE. The modern rental economy has created a generation of serial movers, people who relocate every few years and must repeatedly abandon the infrastructure that makes a space feel like home. Kitchen Trolley addresses this displacement directly – not as a temporary solution but as a genuinely portable domestic anchor. Where most furniture designs claim mobility through collapsibility or lightweight materials, BYBIGTABLE has engineered actual autonomy by consolidating essential kitchen functions into a single wheeled unit.
The design operates on a principle of strategic compression. Rather than miniaturizing every kitchen element, the trolley identifies the irreducible core – storage, refrigeration, water access – and integrates these systems into a framework scaled for personal use. The drawer-type refrigerator sits below a sink and faucet assembly, with storage compartments organized around these fixed points. This vertical stacking allows the unit to maintain a compact footprint while preserving functional hierarchy.
What distinguishes the trolley from typical compact kitchen solutions is its adaptive sink cavity. When water access is unnecessary or unavailable, this same recessed space accommodates a portable gas burner, transforming the unit from a prep station into a cooking platform. This dual-purpose cavity demonstrates restraint – the design refuses to incorporate every possible function simultaneously, instead creating a flexible threshold that responds to different spatial contexts and user needs.
The trolley’s mobility changes the relationship between user and infrastructure. Traditional kitchens root inhabitants to a location through plumbing and electrical connections.
