Maubeuge Apartment
Maubeuge is a minimalist apartment designed by the Paris-based architecture practice DUNY. Situated in a late 19th-century suburban building in France’s capital, the renovation transforms a previously “mundane” 67 square-meter (about 721 square-feet) apartment into a bright and contemporary living space by amplifying light, maximizing space, and introducing warm and tactile materials throughout the space.
The architectural intervention began with the removal of the attic floor, allowing the main living area to become a double-height space that amplifies openness and draws daylight deep into the apartment. Character is layered into this newly expanded volume through references to mid-century design, visible in the warmth of custom wood casework, alongside distinctly French influences. Parisian stone, lime, and Dordogne stone (all sourced within the country) introduce tactility and depth, while an emphasis on openness nods to interiors of the South of France. Together, these materials shape an atmosphere that balances warmth and texture with bright white floors and restrained furnishings.
The Maubeuge Apartment reflects the studio’s broader practice, which focuses on enhancing existing spaces through minimal yet considered interventions that reveal their latent potential while respecting their history.
