Sound and Stillness

A Rotated Plan for Sound and Stillness is a minimalist music studio located in Shanghai, China, designed by Spiritual Universe Architects. The project’s central design problem was structural rather than conceptual: a grid of shear walls divided the 180-square-meter interior into narrow, disconnected zones that resisted the fluid, open quality essential to a percussion-centered teaching and performance environment. The solution – a subtle rotation of the primary spatial axis – is elegant in its economy. By shifting the organizational logic of the plan against the fixed structural grid, formerly residual angled corners were absorbed into the main field and reprogrammed as usable space. One such corner, on the eastern side, now holds a multi-functional stepped platform that doubles as audience seating and a teaching area, its orientation calibrated to align with pedestrian sightlines from the street. The rotation does not read as a dramatic formal gesture but as a quiet correction, one that produces spatial generosity without altering the building’s structure.

Lead architect Yanru Yang brings personal knowledge of percussion performance to the project – a background that informs decisions not typically within the scope of architectural training. Acoustic design here is addressed at multiple scales simultaneously. At the planning level, the angled walls produced by the rotational strategy naturally disrupt standing waves and flutter echoes. The full-height glass facade is installed at a slight incline, achieving both visual continuity with the street and improved acoustic isolation. Below the floor, a raised system incorporates vibration dampening layers. Wall cavities surrounding instrument zones are filled with soundproofing materials, while the angled remnant walls left by the plan reorganization are packed with acoustic fill and function as low-frequency absorbers – turning what might have been awkward leftovers into performative elements.

Limestone mosaic flooring in the entrance and corridor introduces a granular, quietly rhythmic texture that reads almost like a garden path before giving way to warm wood in the main performance area. Venetian plaster and neutral paint tones keep the envelope calm, allowing the instruments themselves – handpans, therapeutic sound bowls, drums of various traditions – to read as objects of visual and cultural interest. Displayed within the interior and visible from the street, these instruments function as a kind of embedded exhibition, making percussion culture legible to passersby who might not otherwise encounter it.
