Preps of the week: Morgan leads host San Marin to tournament title
The San Marin varsity boys basketball team hosted its first tournament this past weekend. Miller Morgan made sure the home team came out on top, taking tournament MVP honors as the Mustangs went 3-0.
Terra Linda’s Evan Brewster and Marin Catholic’s Henry Dibble also had big weeks for their respective teams. Tam and San Rafael got big games from multiple players against each other in an MCAL preview. On the girls’ side, Branson’s Kate Spaulding averaged 18.5 points in a pair of wins and Archie Williams’ Reese Patton averaged 22.5 points.
In soccer, Branson’s Cooper Little and Tam’s Devin Perkins scored multiple goals to help lift their teams to victory. On the girls’ side, Branson got braces from two different players en route to a 2-0-0 week while Terra Linda’s Remi David netted twice against Novato.
Miller Morgan, San Marin boys basketball
Morgan posted a double-double and was named the MVP of the first Mustang Invitational tournament as San Marin took the title with a 61-44 win against Rancho Cotate on Saturday. Morgan scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds against the Cougars one night after scoring a team-high 19 points in a 53-46 win against Foothill in the semifinals. Joey Engler, Jake Beisler, and Kellen Dunning were also named to the all-tournament team. San Marin is set to compete on Friday in the Bambauer Classic at Marin Catholic.
Evan Brewster, Terra Linda boys basketball
Brewster piled up points and rebounds as the Trojans finished in second place at the Frank Wells Tournament at Albany on Saturday. Brewster had 24 points and 17 rebounds in a 66-59 first-round win against John Swett on Thursday then scored a team-high 17 points in a 66-44 win against McKinleyville on Friday. Brewster scored 34 points as TL fell to host Albany 57-54 in the final. Brewster and teammate Cameron Gregoire (15 points against Swett) were all-tournament selections.
Henry Dibble, Marin Catholic boys basketball
Dibble connected on eight 3-pointers and scored 26 points to lead Marin Catholic to a 77-60 win against Ukiah on Friday night. Dibble scored 14 more points the next night in a 58-49 win against Marin Academy. MC is set to host the 16-team Bambauer Classic starting on Friday. The field includes San Marin, San Domenico, and Archie Williams. University and Marin Catholic are among the top-ranked teams in the bracket.
Porthos Oliveira and Elliot Kruger, Tam boys basketball
Oliveira and Kruger keyed a 10-0 fourth-quarter run that helped the Red-tailed Hawks rally for a 64-61 non-league win against San Rafael on Saturday. Oliveira led the way with 21 point while Kruger scored 18. “Elliott Kruger’s defense was key,” Tam coach Tim Morgan said. “He worked hard on (San Rafael’s Luke) Shapiro, forcing him to take tough shots. And then Porthos came up with the big shots when we needed them.”
Wyatt Tornello and Luke Shapiro, San Rafael boys basketball
Tornello had a huge game to lead the Bulldogs to a 49-47 victory against Lowell on Friday night. Tornello scored 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, keeping the Bulldogs in the game long enough for Jax Aguillon to win the game with a shot at the buzzer. Tornello continued his strong play with 14 points and 10 rebounds against Tam on Saturday. Shapiro, who missed a few games with an injury, was no worse for wear scoring 27 of his game-high 30 points in the second half against Tam.
Luna Diaz and Sophie Arnal, Branson girls soccer
Diaz scored both goals in a 2-0 non-league victory against Marin Catholic on Tuesday then netted again in a 4-0 win against Rancho Cotate on Thursday. Arnal scored twice in the win against Rancho Cotate, both times off assists by Julia Myerberg.
Remi David, Terra Linda girls soccer
David scored a pair of unassisted goals on Friday to lift Terra Linda to a 2-0 non-league win against Novato.
Cooper Little, Branson boys soccer
Little scored the winning goal to lift the Bulls to a 2-1 victory against Marin Academy on Tuesday then scored the equalizer as Branson continued its tour of Marin’s BCL West teams with a 1-1 draw against San Domenico on Thursday. Little, who assisted the opening goal by Chris Mao, scored against MA came in the 68th minute and converted a penalty kick against San Domenico in the 63rd minute.
Devin Perkins, Tam boys soccer
Perkins scored both goals for the Red-tailed Hawks in a 2-1 victory against Acalanes on Saturday. Luke Nurney and West Freau provided the assists.
Reese Patton, Archie Williams girls basketball
Patton scored 23 points on Friday to help the Peregrine Falcons earn a measure of revenge with a 54-39 against Encinal, the team that knocked them out of the North Coast Section playoffs last season. Patton was at it again on Saturday, scoring 22 points in a 38-33 win against Napa. Patton grabbed a key rebound in the final 10 seconds, was fouled, and sank two free throws to secure the victory.
Kate Spaulding, Branson girls basketball
Spaulding had a pair of strong scoring games as Branson rolled to a 57-23 victory against International and a 45-31 win against Healdsburg. Spaulding scored 19 points against International and 18 more against Healdsburg.
