Sports briefs: Dominican men hold off late rally in Hawaii

Jorge Ochoa scored 17 points and Darius Best added 15 as the Dominican University men’s basketball team held off Hawaii Hilo for a 65-59 road win on Thursday night.

The Penguins (9-6, 4-5 PacWest) led by as many as 17 points in the second half before the Vulcans went on a 30-16 run to pull within three points in the final 10 seconds. The Penguins made three of four free throws at the end for the final margin.

• Former Archie Williams standout Will Heimbrodt scored 10 points to lead Seattle University to a 75-64 victory against the University of San Diego on Thursday night. San Diego is coached by former Drake High standout Steve Lavin, who is in his fourth year at the helm of the program. The Toreros (7-12, 2-5 WCC) have lost two in a row since beating Pepperdine on Jan. 8.

Women’s basketball

Keyonee Neal led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds as Dominican rolled to an 82-60 road win against Hawaii Hilo on Thursday night.

Julianne Cotterill and Mahliya Wilson both scored 13 points for the Penguins (12-3, 6-3) while Isobel Crosswhite added 12 points. The Penguins won each of the first three quarters, highlighted by a 23-14 third to take a 59-42 lead into the final 10 minutes.

Girls basketball

Brooke Denler scored a game-high 12 points as Redwood rolled to a 66-17 victory over host Terra Linda on Friday. The Giants (11-4, 3-0) led 31-0 in the second quarter before the Trojans (1-9) got on the board. Abby Gonzalez led TL with eight points.

Girls soccer

Lauren Willard scored for Tam in a 1-1 tie against Sonoma Academy on Friday. Freshman Frances Marcero had the assist for the Red-tailed Hawks (3-6-4).

Tam coach Dave Presher noted strong performances from Clio Kunz, Ava McMahon, and Taryn Migliori for Ram and by Sonoma Academy goalie Dahla Scanlan, who plays club for a Marin FC team.

Boys soccer

Brady Stewart scored for Marin Academy in a 1-1 tie against Urban on Friday. Tom Downie had the assist for the Wildcats (2-6-2, 1-2-1 BCL West).

Basketball

The 24/8 Academy will present a MLK Basketball Skills Day with former Terra Linda High star Kenny Woodard on Monday at St. Vincent’s School in San Rafael. The camp welcomes boys and girls from third grade through middle school.

“We want to make sure at each workout, to ask players what they are thankful for, why are they playing this game,” said Woodard, the CEO and founder of the 24/8 Academy. “We want them to know what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for. We are coming together to forge relationships through the game of basketball.”
