Mountain View police veteran selected as next top cop
Mike Canfield joined the force in 1999 and worked in patrol, investigations and support services.
MOUNTAIN VIEW – A nearly 25-year veteran of the Mountain View Police Department is taking over as the city’s next top cop, the city announced Wednesday.
Mike Canfield will start on June 26, the city said in a statement. He replaces Chris Hsiung, who retired in December.
“Mike’s passion for public service and decades of experience as a leader within the Mountain View Police Department will be invaluable for enhancing the strong relationships and trust we have built with the community,” City Manager Kimbra McCarthy said.
Canfield joined MVPD in January 1999 and worked in patrol, investigations and support services. He was promoted to lieutenant in March 2014 and captain in December 2020.
Over the years, Canfield racked up accolades including the Distinguished Service Medal and the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Hero Award, according to the city.
“As your police chief, I am committed to leading the department with purpose and transparency, and building upon the strong relationships with our community members and partners,” Canfield said.
Canfield holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia Southern University and is completing the Harvard Kennedy School’s Senior Leaders in Local Government program.
Canfield’s annual starting salary as police chief will be $334,000, according to the city.
