Pac-12 basketball: Stanford hands Madsen, Cal an 80-58 loss at Maples Pavilion

STANFORD – Mark Madsen has been a part of plenty of Stanford blowouts at Maples Pavilion. Thursday night, for the first time, he was on the losing end of one.

Thanks to strong outside shooting, Stanford capped its final Pac-12 game at Maples with an 80-58 win over Cal.

It was the first game as the opposing coach at Stanford for Madsen, a two-time All-America with the Cardinal who made the NCAA Tournament in each of his four years from 1997-2000.

Maxime Raynaud led Stanford (13-17, 8-12) with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Fardaws Aimaq (18 points) and Jaylon Tyson (17 points) were the only double-digit scorers for Cal (13-18, 9-11) but combined for 10 turnovers.

Freshman guard Kanaan Carlyle went 4 for 5 from behind the arc as seven Cardinal players hit 3s to help Stanford snap a six-game losing streak. Spencer Jones was 2 of 5 from distance to extend his school record to 308 career 3s.

The Bears beat Stanford 73-71 in Berkeley six weeks ago and were going for their first sweep of its rival since 2009-10. Instead, they suffered their fifth straight loss at Maples.

Stanford started 6 of 9 from behind the arc, and an alley-oop from Jones to Raynaud put them up 30-16. Cal made a mini-run at the end of the first half to cut the lead to six, but Carlyle hit a 3 at the buzzer to make it 41-32 at halftime.

The Bears started the second half by committing turnovers on their first four possessions, and Stanford scored the first seven points to make it 48-32. Cal never got closer than 14 after that, and the Cardinal led by as much as 24 on a 3 by Brandon Angel with 5:35 remaining.

Next up for both teams is their final Pac-12 Tournament, which begins Wednesday in Las Vegas.
