The inspector general of police, Solomon Arase has said that the Nigeria Police Force has over 500 lawyers practicing within the force.
Speaking at the commissioning of the police legal building at the force headquarters on Friday, March 18, Arase said the Nigeria police prides itself as one of the institution with the highest number of lawyers in Nigeria.
He said the construction of the police legal building is aimed at enhancing the institutional capacity of the police towards attaining its sacred mandate within the internal security landscape of Nigeria.
“In acknowledgment of these realities, your excellency, on my appointment as the inspector general of police, I engaged the strengthening of the operational capacity of the force as on of my thematic policing strategies. “I similarly, advanced the concept of rule of law-driven policing,” Arase said.
He said the strategies require re-equipment programme through acquisition and deployment of operational tools to enhance the potency of the police in delivery quality security services to Nigerians.
The structure is symbolic of a new thinking police leadership towards advancing democratic and rule of law values in Nigeria, Arase said.

“It also requires the re-positioning and capacitation of the legal department of the Nigeria Police Force to lead the police in playing its critical role within the criminal justice delivery system of the country,” he said.
The police chief said before the construction of the building, the police had not been able to make use of its lawyers optimally.
“This is because these officers have been operating without library facilities and office space befitting of their noble profession,” the police chief said.
He added that it is the determination of the leadership of the institution to usher these police lawyers into the deserved dignity that influenced the construction of the Nigeria police law complex.
Arase said: “The complex will act as a befitting edifice and national headquarters for all lawyers in the Nigeria Police Force.”
Also commissioned alongside the building were operational vehicles and materials donated for the stabilization of security in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.
They include: 200 Toyota Hilux vehicles equipped with police communication gadgets, springbuck armoured personnel carriers, nine water tankers, 20 Toyota Hilux vans and five Toyota Camry saloon cars.
Others are: assorted communication and power generating items, kits and tents, 50 Toyota saloon cars and 15 Mercedes Benz troop carrier trucks.

Some of the items, Arase said, were donated by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)
The new structure is equipped with a library wing as Arase said efforts are being made to activate an e-library facility.
Speaking at the event, the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo while commending the police leadership for its achievement said the security of the Nigerian people is the primary assignment of the present administration.
He said any nation serious with the protection of its citizens must comply with the rules of the criminal justice act system.
“We are exploring diplomatic channels to also build the capacity of the police to address security challenges. This is also part of efforts to re-establish civil authority and the criminal justice system in the northeast and reintegrate displaced people in the northeast,” Osinbajo said.
Also present at the event were the chief justice of Nigeria, Mahmood Mohammed and chairman Senate committee on police affairs, Abu Ibrahim among others.
