Ibibia Walter, the commissioner for water resources in Rivers State, who was abducted by unknown gunmen on Saturday, March 19, the day of the rerun elections in the state, has been free by his abductors.
Walter, who is also the state Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, spoke to journalists, confirming his release by his abductors.

His vehicle was ambushed, as he was on his way to Okrika to vote in the rerun elections. Some of his assailants were masked and “fierce-looking.” They whisked him away to an undisclosed location, preventing the PDP chieftain from casting his vote on the election.

Later in the day, intelligence report revealed that Walter’s abduction may have been in connection with the election. Walter was later freed by his abductors. He was able to communicate with a police team that rescued him.
There has been wide jubilation in Rivers state, since the news of his release filtered in. As usual, it is not clear if any ransom was paid before he was set free and how much or not.
It was in the same Rivers state, before the Saturday, March 19 rerun elections, that a Major in the Nigerian Army and three other soldiers were reportedly shot dead on Thursday, March 17, in Abonnema in Akuku-Toru local government area of Rivers state.
