Federal government intensifies security at Abuja airport due to Christmas rush, ban 'visitors'

Security has been beefed up at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja as passengers are in last minute rush to travel for Christmas.

The Nigerian Airforce had a simulation exercise at the Airport three months ago to prepare for possible attacks
Daily Trust reports that stern looking and armed security officers were stationed at vantage positions while some were sighted patrolling the airport environment.
The Aviation Security, (AVSEC), personnel also increased search and surveillance at the entry and other critical points at the airport.

Visitors at the airport, who had no tickets or prior appointments, were not allowed into the terminal buildings as part of enhanced security measures, especially at the international section.
An official of one of the airlines quoted in the report said the traffic volume has increased due to Christmas rush but it is not comparable to the traffic of last year and the year before.
He also said aviation fuel (Jet A1) supply has greatly improved even though it was still not sufficient to service 100 percent needs of airlines.
Nigeria have in the past suffered terrorist attacks and breach of peace which must have informed the decision of the government.

Also, security experts in the aviation industry recently warned that terror attacks are imminent at airports around the country.
Three months ago, the Nigerian Air Force carried out a simulation exercise at the airport to prepare officers for any terrorist attacks.
