One injured in shooting with Newark police
NEWARK, Ohio (WCMH) -- One person was taken to a hospital Friday morning after a shooting involving Newark police.
No officers were injured. The person went to a Columbus hospital after the incident on the grounds of the Licking County Family YMCA, along West Church Street.
The person's condition was not immediately known. The shooting took place just after 7 a.m.
A YMCA employee said the incident was visible on its security cameras. The entrance was shut down and part of the property placed on lockdown.
"Typically on a summer day, camp day, we'd have 250 to 300 kids on campus," said Adam Shilling, CEO of Buckeye Valley Family YMCA, which includes the Newark location. "We're thankful that day camp is not in session at the moment because school is about to get started again."
The shooting was confirmed by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which was called to the scene about 8:20 a.m. The BCI typically investigates shootings involving police agencies.
