“We love working with Nvidia and they make the best AI chips in the world,” Altman said in a Monday post on social platform X. “We hope to be a gigantic customer for a very long time. I don’t get where all this insanity is coming from.”
The post came after Reuters reported earlier in the day that OpenAI was unsatisfied with the chips and has been looking for alternative suppliers since last year. The report cited eight unnamed sources.
According to the report, OpenAI is not satisfied with the speed with which Nvidia chips deliver answers to ChatGPT users, has developed agreements with AMD and other GPU suppliers, and has had talks with Cerebras, Groq and other chip suppliers.
Nvidia told Reuters, per the report: “Customers continue to choose Nvidia for inference because we deliver the best performance and total cost of ownership at scale.”
An OpenAI spokesperson said in the report that Nvidia powers most of OpenAI’s inference fleet and provides the best performance per dollar for inference.
OpenAI said Jan. 14 that it will integrate 750 megawatts of ultra-low latency compute from Cerebras to accelerate the response time of its AI models.
In October, OpenAI launched a multibillion-dollar partnership with AMD that will see the companies develop AI data centers running on AMD processors.
It was reported Sunday (Feb. 1) that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said his company’s proposed $100 billion investment into OpenAI was “never a commitment” and that “we will invest one step at a time.”
In a letter of intent signed in September, Nvidia said it planned to invest as much as $100 billion in OpenAI to help the AI startup construct data centers and other AI infrastructure, with those data centers using AI chips.
Huang’s comments came after The Wall Street Journal reported Friday (Jan. 30) that the planned investment had stalled after some people within Nvidia began having doubts about the deal.
According to the Sunday report, Huang said Saturday (Jan. 31) that it was “nonsense” to suggest he was unhappy with OpenAI.
“We will invest a great deal of money,” Huang said. “I believe in OpenAI. The work that they do is incredible. They’re one of the most consequential companies of our time.”
