Leaders of Azerbaijan and Syria discuss energy cooperation as they rebuild ties

Azerbaijan and Syria's leaders have pledged to strengthen ties, focusing on energy cooperation. On Saturday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev welcomed Syria's interim leader Ahmad Al-Sharaa in Baku. Al-Sharaa, whose forces ousted former President Bashar Assad in December, thanked Azerbaijan for its support. Both leaders criticized Assad's government for damaging international relations. They discussed plans to export Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Turkey and rebuilding Syria’s energy infrastructure. Читать дальше...

Lawmakers visit 'Alligator Alcatraz,' but some wonder how much they'll get to see

Florida lawmakers are touring a controversial immigration detention center in the Everglades. The facility, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz," was rapidly built on a remote airstrip and houses 3,000 detainees. Gov. Ron DeSantis and fellow Republicans have promoted it as a tough response to immigration enforcement. However, detainees and advocates report awful conditions, including worm-infested food, overflowing toilets, and inconsistent air conditioning. State officials deny these claims. Some lawmakers... A look at the countries that received Trump's tariff letters

President Donald Trump has been sending letters to countries outlining higher tariffs they’ll face if they don’t make trade deals with the U.S. by Aug. 1. The letters were posted on Truth Social. Trump warned countries that they would face even higher tariffs if they retaliated by increasing their own import taxes. Brazil is facing a 50% tariff and Canada 35% if they don't reach deals. Mexico and the European Union are both facing 30% tariffs.

Trump announces 30% tariffs against EU, Mexico to begin Aug. 1

President Donald Trump has announced he’s levying tariffs of 30% against the European Union and Mexico starting August 1. Trump detailed the planned tariffs Saturday in letters posted to his social media account. It's a move that could cause massive upheaval between the U.S. and two of its biggest trade partners. European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU may adopt "proportionate countermeasures" if Trump moves ahead with the tariffs. Mexico's government in a statement described... Trump says he wants to deport 'the worst of the worst.' Government data tells another story

President Donald Trump has pledged to target "the worst of the worst" as he moves to deport millions of people from the U.S. But government data contradicts this narrative. As of June 29, 71.7% of people detained by ICE had no criminal convictions, and only a small fraction were classified as high-level threats. Research has consistently shown that immigrants, including those who have entered the country illegally, are less likely to be incarcerated than native-born citizens and that immigration... Texas floodwaters damaged crops and endangered livestock. Now farmers and ranchers are cleaning up

Along the banks of creeks and rivers outside of Austin, farmers growing everything from Christmas trees to ostriches have been affected by flooding. Contending with downed fences and debris, moving animals to different pastures and cleaning up the wreckage are all part of the challenge when extreme weather collides with tight margins. The pressure is especially on for specialty growers who rely on local events, seasonal tourists or specific markets to sell their crops.

30% US tariff on European goods threatens to shake up a key trade relationship

President Donald Trump's announcement of 30% tariffs on the European Union will have repercussions for companies and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. The tariffs could make everything from French cheese and Italian leather goods to German electronics and Spanish pharmaceuticals more expensive in the U.S. As of earlier this week, the EU’s executive commission said its leaders were still hoping to strike a deal with the Trump administration. Without one, the EU said it was prepared to retaliate... Читать дальше...

A year after Trump's near-assassination, friends and allies see some signs of a changed man

One year after Donald Trump's near-assassination at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, friends and allies see some signs of a changed man. While largely the same brash Trump, they say he is more attentive and more grateful and speaks openly about how he believes he was saved by God to save the country and serve a second term. And while many who survive traumatic events try to block them from memory, Trump has instead surrounded himself with memorabilia commemorating the episode. He’s decorated... Читать дальше...
