Greece's government says it is suspending asylum applications for migrants arriving on Crete by sea. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the decision in parliament on Wednesday, citing a surge in arrivals from Libya. Over 2,000 migrants have reached the island since the weekend, bringing the total number of arrivals this year to over 10,000. The suspension will last three months and applies only to those arriving by sea from North Africa. Mitsotakis also revealed plans to build a detention site on Crete and collaborate with Libya’s coast guard to stop migrant boats. Overnight, authorities intercepted a trawler carrying 520 migrants near Crete and redirected them to a mainland facility near Athens.
