Japan's 91-year-old former Emperor Akihito has been hospitalized to adjust his heart medication, palace officials say. He was diagnosed in May with myocardial ischemia, a condition reducing blood flow to the heart. Despite two months of treatment, doctors saw little improvement and decided on additional medication. On Monday, Akihito underwent tests, including an electrocardiogram, to determine the proper dosage while avoiding side effects. Akihito, who abdicated in 2019 and now holds the title of Emperor Emeritus, previously had heart surgery in 2012 and was diagnosed with right heart failure three years ago. Officials have not said how long he will stay hospitalized.
